Modern manufacturing in undergoing a fundamental change; the fourth industrial revolution - 'Industry 4 and The Internet of Things' mean rapid technological advances and the merging of physical and digital manufacturing are helping to change the way manufacturers operate and raising the bar for required employee skillsets. The UK manufacturing sector needs to find almost one million workers by 2020 simply to replace those retiring or leaving industry - this is a huge challenge and women have a vital role to play in this.

With Government placing more emphasis on STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) in schools and universities and addressing the sector through the Industrial Strategy, manufacturing and engineering are no longer considered the poor relation of science but provide students with an opportunity to remain curious and open-minded, to learn, to think, question, debate and argue logically.

Jan Ward CBE, Chief Executive, Corrotherm International Ltd

Jan Ward CBEJan founded Corrotherm in 1992 and started supplying high grade metals to the oil gas and desalination markets and in 2009 was named the UK’s most inspirational female entrepreneur, winning the coveted NatWest Everywoman Award which champions female entrepreneurs. Highly passionate about the manufacturing industry Jan will share her experiences of the sector looking at the benefits of having concrete strategies for recruiting, retaining and advancing women into the sector, how employee diversity makes good business sense and why employing an apprentice with long-term goals, can raise profitability.
