Encouraging entrepreneurship in Derby and Derbyshire

Posted on 14 November 2016

A scheme has been launched to encourage entrepreneurship in Derby and Derbyshire.

The Chamber is working with the City and County councils to deliver the D2 Business Starter Project.

The aim of the programme, which started on 1 November, is to encourage an increase in entrepreneurial activity in the city and across the county and help entrepreneurs develop sustainable businesses.

Part of the intensive and focused approach will be to stimulate enterprise creation and reduce the barriers and inequalities faced by deprived communities.

D2 Business Starter Project will be delivered through workshops and one-to-one advice. It is hoped the programme will result in the creation of 120 new business before it ends in October 2019.

To engage with would-be entrepreneurs, the Chamber will host a series of informal events in the city and across the county at which they can meet project staff and learn more about how the programme will help them.

The engagement events will be followed by a series of workshops beginning in January next year and covering idea generation, local market analysis, ideas assessment and commercialisation possibilities, appraisal and selection and taking a business plan to market.

As the workshops are taking place, delegates will receive intensive one-to-one support to help them stay focused and motivated.

The workshops will culminate in a graduations ceremony to celebrate delegates’ achievements, promote role models and change cultures across target areas.

The programme will also feature a specialist IT adviser to support implementation and exploitation of digital technologies, including setting up websites and making the most of social media platforms.

Paul Stuart, the Chamber’s Head of Enterprise, said: “This is a very exciting scheme which we are confident will create new businesses and encourage entrepreneurship from the more deprived communities in Derby and Derbyshire.”

Cllr Martin Rawson, Derby City Council, said: “Derby is a great place to start a business and has a history of supporting entrepreneurs to realise their ambitions. Derby City Council is delighted to be supporting this project which will lead to the creation of more sustainable businesses in the city, creating jobs for local people.”

Councillor Anne Western, Derbyshire County Council’s Leader, said: “Derbyshire County Council is excited to be a part of this project and we are confident that through the programme local entrepreneurs will be guided and supported, from drawing up business plans to the launch of new enterprises across the county. Helping to build a strong economy, creating jobs and supporting new and established businesses is a key priority for us as it leads to strong and thriving communities.”
