Helping to promote your business

The Chamber has a small marketing team which has developed many different ways through which it can help to promote your business in print, online and through broadcast media.

This guide summarises those opportunities and explains what we need from you to make it happen.

PRINT:

Business Network:

Ten times a year (monthly except August and January) the Chamber publishes a members’ magazine which has a print run of 5,000 and an estimated readership of more than 15,000.

The first editorial section of the magazine is members’ news but there are also opportunities to be included in other sections such as international, business support, the big interview, the focus feature and even politics.

Editorial coverage in the magazine is free. Submission of news items for the magazine does not guarantee publication.

Advertising does cost but rates are heavily discounted for Chamber members. To learn more about advertising costs, have a look at the media pack.

Editorial prerogative for the magazine rests with the Chamber but is published on behalf of the Chamber by Kemps, which sets the advertising rates.

The magazine will also be published online as a vbook, which means that in addition to hitting a targeted regional market it has global appeal for advertising.

ONLINE:

Members’ Briefing:

Published to the same schedule as Business Network, the Chamber prints a second magazine, Members’ Briefing, with a very different remit.

Members’ Briefing is more a guide for business than a news-led publication. It contains ‘soundbites’ of stories with links to the main source of the story, be it a news provider, Government department, training provider, funding assistance or just business guidance.

Some submitted stories can appear in Members’ Briefing as well as Business Network.

Editorial in Members’ Briefing is free. Submission of news items for Members’ Briefing does not guarantee publication.

Website:

The Chamber has a very successful website (www.emc-dnl.co.uk) which receives about 85,000 unique visits a month. About a third of all visits to the website are to our news portals.

Opportunities to promote your business FREE on the website are many.

Press releases and pictures submitted for the magazine or items submitted for Members’ Briefing will automatically be considered for publication on the news portal of the website, sometimes as an alternative to other publication, sometimes in addition.

Submission of news items for does not guarantee publication.

Job vacancies can be advertised free on the website. There is a format you must follow but all you have to do is look at published examples to determine what we need.

Member-to-member offers can be promoted free on the website. They must be offers exclusive to members and have a finite period. Again, there is a pre-set format.

All members are listed by name, contact, location and business description in our Members’ directory on the website.

Advertising is allowed in specific sections of the website and to pre-set formats. Please refer to the website for details.

Eshots

Every working day the Chamber sends out targeted eshots on a variety of subjects from training opportunities, forthcoming events, business advice and members’ news.

The eshots carry banner advertising which costs £50(+VAT). They can also be sponsored. Call our marketing department for further information.

BROADCAST:

The Chamber does not have its own broadcast service but has very good connections with regional (and some national) radio and television programmes which often want case studies.

Many of our senior staff are frequent guests on regional news programmes and occasionally are asked to speak against a commercial or industrial backdrop. When this happens we always seek to ensure the backdrop is a Chamber member.

In our Quarterly Economic Survey we always ask respondents if they would be willing to be used as case studies. To be included, just tick the ‘yes’ box. It costs you nothing and can lead to unprecedented exposure, even on the BBC.

GENERAL GUIDANCE:

In the first instance, submit your material to mgzn@m-n.ouaaieecdlc.k.

If you want to discuss any of the opportunities, call us on 01246 207207, asking for Nathan Fearn, Publications Manager/Editor, Business Network, or Alison Gray, Marketing Manager, in the first instance.

When submitting material for consideration for publication:

Do - remember you are writing for a predominantly business audience.
•Do - read the magazine first so that you have an idea of what we use and how we use it.
•Do - feel free to suggest future feature ideas.
•Do - read our pre-edition synopsis and offer contributions for the main feature.
•Do - send us copy as text in an email or in Word documents.
•Do - include images (of at least 1mb, well lit and in focus).

Don’t - send us cheque presentations or birthdays. We have 3,900 members and they all have birthdays every year, we don’t have space for 390 birthdays a month so we don’t publish them.
•Don’t - send us a company resumé or just a link to a press release – we won’t look at it.
•Don’t - send newsletters or links – send press releases.
•Don’t - embed images in documents.
•Don't send us blurry, badly lit images.

Submissions should include the six basic ingredients of a news story – who, what, where, when, why and how. They should be concise, factually accurate, topical and free from comment, ie, only state you are the ‘leading manufacturer of life-size plastic sheep’ if you can prove it. We will cut out what we deem to be promotional makeweight.

If you can, include a bright, clever, in focus picture. Images should be between 1mg and 2mg for print, 72dpi for the internet.

Think - would you want read your story if it were about another company or person? If not, don't send it.

If you need help drafting a press release or don't know if your story is good enough, call us and talk to us. We’re here to help you.
