HarriDeputy Chief Executive and Finance Director of the University of Derby.

A member of the University Executive team, I am responsible for all resources/core functions, managed by my team of 4 Directors. Namely, HR, Estates, Information Technology Services and Corporate Finance (which includes Procurement). In addition I am also responsible for Legal and Commercial activities and have responsibility as Chief Executive Officer for our key subsidiaries which are DSRL and Derby Theatre Ltd.

My key strategic responsibility is to ensure the financial stability and sustainability of the University and to direct necessary investments on resources. Financial results for 2015/16 show the University Group delivered an impressive £12.2m operating surplus with an EBITDA which reflects the true trading position in cash terms of £19.7m which is 12.9% of the turnover. Our year-end cash balance was healthy at £28.3m and we have £16m placed on long term deposit with investment managers. The net assets value increased by £87m.

My portfolio also includes responsibility for overall sports development and sports performance at the University, which is done through the now established Team Derby brand. Investment in facilities and the success of our student’s has seen sport firmly established at the University and enhanced the profile of the University in the sector and the region.

Outside the sector I hold a number of Non-Executive positions.

Prior to joining the University in June 2001, I worked for the Daimler Benz Group for nine years holding various senior finance positions including the position of Finance Director/ Company Secretary as well as being responsible for the Car Fleet Financing and Fleet Management subsidiaries. During my period as the Finance Director I was instrumental in drawing together a five-year European expansion plan for the business, effectively setting it up in the UK and rolling the business model out in Europe as a new operation. As part of this I led two large scale acquisitions and the post-acquisition restructure process.

Most of my career I have worked in the merchant banking and financial services sector with particular interest in Corporate Finance and Business Restructures.

I hold a Masters Degree in Business Administration (MBA) and am a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants a member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers and a Chartered Director.

I was appointed as a Magistrate and a Justice of Peace by Her Majesty’s Court service in 2006.

I am a lifelong cricket supporter.
