This event is held in partnership with the National Deaf Children's Society (NCDS) to support their campaign to get deaf young people into work – and into jobs that inspire them.

This event is a training session designed for employers and aims to deliver on the following learning objectives:

  • Identify obligations to deaf people as an employer
  • Name the support available to deaf people in employment
  • Describe what cost effective reasonable adjustments can be made
  • Name practical steps employers can take to support deaf people in their employment setting
  • Use a range of tactics for communicating with deaf people
  • Demonstrate some basic work place signs
  • Describe basic deaf culture, including etiquette and greetings
  • Explain what you can do if communication breaks down

8.30am - Welcome from the Lucy Robinson, Director of Resources, East Midlands Chamber (Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire) 

8.45am - Session starts:

Topic 1 - Everyone is Different (and introduction)

Topic 2 - Deaf Awareness

  • Different ways to communicate
  • How to overcome communication barriers
  • Language/ Creating inclusive environments

  • Health and Safety & Risk Assessment

Topic 4 - Workplace

  • Positive approach and inclusive environment
  • Tips and practical steps (Inductions/ 121s/ training)
  • Cost effective reasonable adjustments

Topic 5 - Technology and support

  • Case studies
  • Obligations (Equality Act)
  • Different equipment to support DP
  • Funding (Access to Work)
  • Responsibilities and cost to organisation
  • Different types of communication support (expectations)

Topic 6 - The Way Forward

  • Case studies: positive comments
  • BSL videos
  • Signpost to resources

Close - we aim to close the agenda for 11.30am, there will be 30 minutes for questions
