Building on the success of last year’s conference, the 2019 Manufacturing and Engineering Conference will examine the latest thinking, policy and projections for the manufacturing sector in the East Midlands.

Major changes in the political and economic landscape are continuing across the world, with 2019 showing no sign of respite – the day of the conference will in fact be one day before the UK's exit of the EU.

As the country looks to develop a vision for future success, aligning to the five areas for growth and the four “Grand Challenges” in the Governments Industrial Strategy, the conference will bring together leaders from across the sector and – through a series of keynote and expert panel discussions – will explore the challenges and opportunities to develop strategies that will enable the East Midlands to continue to lead and drive the sector forward in the UK and beyond.

With the theme of “Future Growth” we will examine key topics aimed at supporting the sector, covering:

  • Finance and Investment
  • Skills and Productivity
  • Technology, Innovation and Digital Transformation
  • Policy and Strategy

The conference is kindly hosted by The Manufacturing Technology Centre in Coventry.

  • Government vision for the sector, including Q&A – The Industrial Strategy sets out four Grand Challenges and five foundations of productivity to put the UK at the forefront of the industries of the future, ensuring that the UK takes advantage of major global changes, improving people’s lives and to support a vision for a transformed economy, we will hear from Alex Williams, Deputy Director for the Industrial Strategy, BEIS who will provide delegates with an overview of how the Government is driving this agenda forward.
  • Bridging the skills gap, employers investing in schools at an earlier age – The demand for talented and qualified employees has never been greater with over two million entrants required by the time today’s primary school pupils reach working age. How then do employers strengthen their links with schools from the primary phase onwards and what are the right ways that they can do that. We look at the research and practice that will help engineering employers develop skilled and diverse workforces of the future; ranging from career related learning in primaries to becoming strategically involved via school governance. • Keynote Speaker – Joining the Digital Dots - the digital journey to successful manufacturing - Digital thinking demands that we look at things differently. Supporting the Digital transformation across manufacturing depends on policy makers and industry working together to “join up the dots.” There has never been a more important time to build an integrated view of what “digital really means” to people, practices, places as well as the platforms we operate on. In this thought provoking and at times surprising keynote, Vodafone will suggest practical actions that can be taken to accelerate the benefits of digital enablement while keeping colleague engagement at the heart of digital ways of working -  Michele Metcalfe,  Regional Head, Wales, The Midlands & East of England, Vodafone Regional Business
