Four WorldSkills UK fashion finalists

Four Foundation Degree Fashion Interpretation and Practice students from New College Nottingham (ncn) have reached the final of the WorldSkills UK Made-to-Measure competition. They will now compete against six other talented students from across the country at Northumbria University from 11 to 13 June.

Markus Wernitznig, 18, came first in the semi-final earlier in May, and is no stranger to WorldSkills competitions, having won the silver medal in the 2009 final. Markus said: "I'm looking forward to the final as it is great to spend time working with people who represent the best in the country. If you win a prize then that's even better."

Second and third places in the semi-final went to Savannah Bailey, 20 and Kathryn Emmerson, 22, with fellow student Kristie Walker, 19, also making the final shortlist.

The Made-to-Measure competition promotes the importance of technical skills required within the UK fashion industry. The top prize is a week's work placement in the pattern room at Debenhams London Head Office. Outstanding competitors from the WorldSkills UK competition 2010 may get a chance to represent the UK in the next international WorldSkills competition in London 2011.

Notes to editors: The competition is called Made to Measure: Fashion Design and is organised by UK Skills in association with industry partners. Now in its third year, the competition offers a unique opportunity for entrants to test their practical abilities and develop their skills. It covers all aspects of the creation of a garment, from the research and design stage though all the processes to completion. WorldSkills London 2011 eligibility criteria: The rule for the WorldSkills competitions states that competitors are required to be under the age of 23 in the year of the competition; this means that for the WorldSkills London 2011, competitors must be born on or after 1 January 1989.
