Chamber Responds to PM Speech on Europe

DNCC Chief Executive George CowcherCommenting on Prime Minister David Cameron's speech about a referendum on the UK's membership of the EU earlier today, George Cowcher, Chief Executive of the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce, said: "The vast majority of businesses in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire which responded to a Chamber survey in June 2012 indicated that they want to stay in the EU.

"More than 25% believe there should be no change in the relationship, over 10% want closer integration and the same proportion want to leave. 47% want to stay in the EU with a looser relationship. In that survey, more than 80% of all respondents wanted to stay in the EU.

"DNCC will be surveying businesses again shortly about the areas where reform of Britain's relationship with the EU will be most beneficial. It will be essential for the UK to come up with positive proposals as soon as possible to end the uncertainty which has been raised by the Prime Minister's statement this morning."
