Businesses meet Baroness D'Souza, the Lords Speaker
The Lord Speaker was eager to clarify the role of the Lords and to convey the willingness of the House to interact with businesses on logistical issues that affect growth and prosperity. The Lords scrutinise legislation, and have made a number of amendments to the Growth and Infrastructure Bill currently making its way through Parliament.
The Lords are keen to interface with businesses on apprenticeships, transport and red tape in particular; and have six sub-committees that scrutinise the implications of EU regulation.
The visiting delegation learned of business’ frustration with the public procurement process; the cost and the pre-qualification rules emanating from Europe. Chamber-members were also keen that the Lords challenge Government on the Coalition’s pledge to reduce the volume and complexity of incoming legislation.
DNCC aims to maintain its dialogue through the use of cross-party working groups (in both Houses) on campaigning issues such as Air Passenger Duty.Back
