Chamber Welcomes Infrastructure Spending Plans
Commenting on Chief Treasury Secretary Danny Alexander’s announcements on key infrastructure projects, George Cowcher, Chief Executive of the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce (DNCC), said: “Although today’s announcement was light on detail, the Chamber is pleased that Government has listened to what members and other businesses have told us they wanted and has included a number of key local projects in its infrastructure spending plans for 2015 to 2020.
“Derby, in particular, will benefit from the firm commitment given to make it a super-connected city, but there are other schemes identified – such as improvements to the A38 and the M1 at junctions 24-25 and 28-31 – which, when complete, will go a long way in helping to free up road capacity for businesses stymied by congestion and poor access.
“The key now is fast delivery on what has been promised. If these announcements are to translate into short-term confidence, medium-term construction jobs and long-term competitiveness, we need to see diggers on the ground and cranes on the horizon and not just empty words.”
