Times Sketch Writer To Speak At Chamber Dinner
The Times newspaper’s parliamentary sketch writer Matthew Parris joins a long list of high profile speakers at previous DNCC dinners which includes John Humphrys, Kate Adie, Bill Turnbull, Jeremy Vine and Alistair Campbell.
He has been named Columnist of the Year at the British Press Awards on more than one occasion.
Born in Johannesburg, Matthew was educated in Britain, graduating from Cambridge and going on to study International Relations at Yale.
Two years at the Foreign Office were followed by a spell at the Conservative Research Department. He then served as a member of staff in Baroness Thatcher’s office until the 1979 General Election, when he was elected MP for West Derbyshire.
Matthew gave up his seat in 1986 and went on to host LWT’s political interview programme, Weekend World.
Aside from politics, Matthew’s other great love is travel. He has led expeditions to Mount Kilimanjaro, Peru and Bolivia as well as to Zaire and the Sahara.
A keen runner, he has also competed several times in the London Marathon, achieving a personal best of two hours 32 minutes.
Matthew has published several compilations of his pieces in The Times and has also edited Scorn, a book of quotations about curses, jibes and general invective. Other literary credits include Great Parliamentary Scandals and Read my Lips, a treasury of things politicians have wished they had not said.
George Cowcher, Chief Executive of the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce, said: “The Chamber has again secured a first-class speaker for its next annual dinner, which is set to be a great event for the business community here in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.
“Matthew Parris is a highly-skilled writer and raconteur with a reputation for telling things as they are and having a unique and amusing take on events. I look forward to his revelations and his humour.”
The 2014 annual dinner is being held at The Belfry Hotel, Nottingham, on Thursday 27 March. The event starts at 7pm and finishes at 11pm. It is being sponsored by Central College Nottingham, Futures Housing, Inside Out Management Group and Dunston Printers.
