Construction skills college formally opened by MP

Derbyshire Construction Skills College has been officially opened by Jessica Lee, MP for Erewash.

The college, in Stanton by Dale is modern, with a comfortable learning environment that is certified by Skills Awards to deliver framework apprenticeship courses for the roofing industry along with associated OSAT NVQ Level 2 and 3 in roofing trades.

In addition to these, the college will also deliver Specialist Apprenticeship Programmes (SAPs) and Specialist Upskilling Programmes (SUPs) in order to address the skills shortage in the construction sector but more specifically the roofing industry.

Its aim is to provide a roofing 'centre of excellence', where quality and safety are paramount.

With the economy picking up the construction industry needs to attract 36,000 new recruits each year for the next five years in order to replace those leaving the sector.

The college will aim to form partnerships in the industry with employers and schools to promote the training they have on offer and to help inspire a range of talented young people to understand the different routes into the sector.

In addition to the apprenticeships the college also offers a range of construction, health and safety, first aid and management courses.

The college was formally opened on 13 February.
