BSDC hosts WorldSkills competitions

A welding competitorBurton and South Derbyshire College (BSDC) has been chosen to host Team UK selection competitions for WorldSkills São Paulo 2015.

Taking place at the College’s Burton Town Centre Campus and at the Construction Academy, Swadlincote, this week, the selection competitions see the most talented and inspirational students from training providers across the UK competing against each other for a coveted place in Team UK

The College will host a range of competitions, from visual merchandising, restaurant service and hairdressing to masonry, brickwork and carpentry, and was selected for its world class facilities and commitment to promoting excellence through skills competitions.

Hairdressing competitiorTo add to the competitive atmosphere, the College will also be welcoming international competitors, who will be travelling from Denmark, Holland, Austria and Brazil, all looking to hone their skills for the finals.

The successful competitors will then battle it out against international skills teams from across the world at the WorldSkills finals taking place in São Paulo, Brazil from 11 to 16 August 2015.

During the week, the College will be inviting schools, employers and members of the public to see the competitors in action and find out more about what Burton and South Derbyshire College has to offer.

Ross Maloney, Chief Executive of Find a Future which manages the UK’s entry into the WorldSkills Competition said: “By participating in the WorldSkills Competition the UK is able to share best practice in apprenticeships and vocational teaching, raising standards on a global scale.

"Through skills competitions and the wider work of Find a Future we want to provide every young person with the chance to unlock their potential and get excited about the world of work.
