Road show aids safety at Willmott Dixon sites

Construction site teams in Nottingham and Leicester focused on safety during Willmott Dixon’s health and safety campaign - All Safe Week.

The week-long roadshow was devoted to promoting awareness of occupational health risks and hazards faced by site teams across the UK.

Travelling 900 miles from Liverpool to Oxford, including stops in Hucknall and Leicester, the All Safe Week roadshow sought to raise awareness of health issues encountered by Willmott Dixon’s site teams – in particular the risks posed by unprotected exposure to dust.

As part of All Safe Week, the contractor raised £300 in aid of the Lighthouse Club, a charity which supports the UK construction industry and provides financial support to people experiencing hardship.

Ben Stoodley, Principal Health, Safety and Environmental Manager at Willmott Dixon, said: “As part of the All Safe programme every year we dedicate a week to raising health and safety awareness on our sites. This year we focused on the risks of dust on our sites, and why it is so important for our teams and contractors to take proper precautions when working on site. We were also proud to support the Lighthouse Club this year – a charity which works to support the construction community in times of crisis.

“As part of the tour we presented a series of informative talks and also tested whether dust masks were fitted properly, as this is a legal safety requirement. The All Safe roadshow is really important, as it helps us to raise awareness of health issues and risks in construction, which if ignored, can lead to illness or poor health.”

The risks of dust were the main focus for the tour, as the number of people with lung diseases such as silicosis has grown rapidly over the past few years.

The All Safe bus toured ten Willmott Dixon sites, including: Darlison Court, Hucknall, and the University of Leicester Medical Building.

As a result of the All Safe tour, 250 individual contractors from 40 different companies attended a range of training sessions at various Willmott Dixon sites. The tour also provided 50 ‘face fit’ dust mask tests, to ensure equipment was up to specification and safe to use.
