ZF [pro]Tech training for Central automotive students

Matt Shakespeare and Davy YatesThe automotive department of Central College Nottingham has become the latest to sign up to [pro]Tech plus, the advanced technical training programme by Chamber member ZF Services UK.

It means students at the college have access to the same in-depth technical information and expert support as established workshops already aligned to the programme.

As well as offering courses from entry level to master technician, the college operates its own newly-opened garage, Auto Central, on London Road, Nottingham, which is run by students and open to the public.

Matt Shakespeare, Technical Sales Manager, ZF Services UK, said Central College Nottingham was a welcome addition to the growing [pro]Tech network.

“As a major employer also in Nottingham and working in the automotive and other sectors, ZF Services UK is keen to encourage and support young people seeking a future as vehicle technicians,” he said.

“[pro]Tech plus is the higher level programme that ZF offers. By signing up the college this has created the opportunity for course tutors and students to attend our specialised training modules as well as gaining access to detailed technical information about ZF products and extensive additional practical support.”

[pro]Tech plus is relevant to Level 3 and 4 qualifications that the college offers. These focus on complicated diagnostics and electronics as well as mechanical components, which are covered in Levels 1 and 2.

Support also includes on-site visits by a ZF Technical Support Engineer, a technical support hotline, access to technical bulletins and product information, installation instructions and a dedicated [pro]Tech Garage Scheme Developer.

Matt said: “Today’s vehicle systems are always evolving and are increasingly complex. [pro]Tech provides the very latest information and technical expertise from ZF, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of driveline and chassis components recognised for the leading brands Sachs, Lemförder, Boge, Lenksysteme and ZF Parts.”

ZF Services UK, the head office of which is in Abbeyfields Road, Nottingham, already has a strong relationship. It opened its own Technical Training Centre in Northamptonshire last year, offering a wide range of courses for customers. For one of the modules, on hybrid vehicles, ZF Services UK uses facilities at the college in addition to its own.

Davy Yates, Curriculum Manager Automotive, for the College’s School of Technology, said: “Demand for places from students looking to become mechanics and technicians continues to be extremely strong.

“Utilising [pro]Tech plus gives us a valuable mechanism for educating the students about ZF brands and products and how to install them.

“If parts are correctly fitted that goes a long way to reducing the risk of warranty returns, which is important when running a successful garage business.”

Davy said the Auto Central workshop was performing well with other garages in Nottingham often sending customers there. An MOT bay is to be installed over the coming months, which will add another element to the training.
