Buxton’s spa sparkles as one of best in UK
Buxton’s Devonshire Spa, at the University of Derby Buxton Campus, is one of the top five day spas in the country, according to the shortlist for a national competition which puts it in the same league as the Urban Retreat at Harrods.
The spa, based in the historic Devonshire Dome, is run on commercial lines to give students aiming to make a career in spa management the best training for the real world.
This has been recognised by Professional Beauty magazine, which has shortlisted the Devonshire Spa for the title of Day Spa of the Year 2016.
A victory in the competition would be the icing on the birthday cake for the University’s Buxton Campus – which celebrates a decade in Buxton next year.
Isobel Stockdale, Head of Spa and Tourism at the University, said: “Our spa isn’t just a training facility, it’s a commercial spa which is being judged among the top day spas in the country.”
“More importantly, as a university, this demonstrates to potential students that here we offer an experience which is considered first class in the real world.”
This is the third time the magazine has shortlisted the Devonshire Spa, which began operating in 2006 – the same year as the Campus was officially opened by Prince Charles.
Merging education by industry professionals with a “classroom” which is also a real facility was one of the reasons why Swedish spa expert Anna Bjurstam has described the University of Derby’s spa degrees as the best in the world.
Amy Robinson, Interim Manager at the Devonshire Spa, said: “We are a small spa in comparison to the others on the shortlist but we have the advantage of giving value for money, a huge focus on guest customer service and that extra effort to make each visit a special experience.”
Many Buxton Campus graduates have gone on to take up work at management level in the industry as soon as they picked up their degrees.Back
