Expanding Logistics Firm Invests More Than £1m

Sam NelsonA boom in freight business, including new customers, has led to an investment of more than £1m by one of Derbyshire's largest logistics companies.

Nelson Distribution has invested in new vehicles and trailers and offices at its depot in Goods Road, Belper, and created 35 jobs in the past two years.

The 66-year-old private company has had a “significant” increase in turnover over in that time with 50 new customers fueling growth.

This included a deal, one of the largest contracts in Nelson's history, with ABRU, of nearby Derwentside Industrial Park, to distribute hundreds of thousands of ladders a year to small retail shops and large DIY warehouses across the UK and Eire.

The company, which includes warehousing on its portfolio, has been at its present location for 30 years. It was run from a 15-year-old building that had become too small for the firm's needs.

The building has been extended and refurbished to include a swish second floor that houses a management suite.

“We have doubled the size of the traffic office to support the operation of a significantly-increased vehicle fleet,” said Managing Director Simon Nelson.

“The improved layout of the building is more spacious and efficient. It' is a building for the future to support growth in the business and it gives a better impression of the business which we hope will impress potential customers.

“We have had very good comments about it and our employees like the new working space.”

A major part of the growth over the past year has been put down to joining Palletforce, the Burton-headquartered palletised network, as a a shareholder member.

Nelson Distribution has been recognised by Palletforce as the best new member over the past two years for quality and sales growth.

“I'm delighted and proud to have this accolade, which is an industry-recognised award,” said Simon.
