Awards hat-trick for Huub

Dean Jackson and the Huub Design Team, with sponsor Malcolm Prentice from GarrandaleDerby-based sports and swimwear manufacturer Huub Design has scooped a hat-trick of prestigious business awards, including the coveted Business of the Year title for 2015.

The company received its awards at the East Midlands Chamber’s* 2015 Derbyshire Business Awards dinner, which took place at the Roundhouse last night.

As well as being named Derbyshire Business of the Year, the company also walked away with the Small Business of the Year award, while company founder and CEO, Dean Jackson, was named Entrepreneur of the Year.

The firm launched four years ago and has developed a multi-award-winning range of triathlon clothing, wetsuits and endurance sport accessories which are worn by some of the world’s top athletes, including the Olympic medal-winning Brownlee brothers.

Huub’s products are sold in more than 17 countries and 300 retail outlets worldwide and it counts TV chef Gordon Ramsey and Formula One ace Jenson Button amongst its celebrity clients.

Collecting the Business of the Year award, Dean said: “Wow, thank you. I love Derby to bits and when I managed to bring the Jenson Button Triathlon to Derby, it’s something I’m immensely proud of.

“When I travel the world, people say ‘Huub Design, where are you from?’ and I say Derby. They say ‘where’s that?’ and you have to say ‘near Nottingham’. But recently, there’s an encyclopaedia of triathlon come out. It states that the wetsuit experts are in Derby – it’s neoprene, it’s aero-engines, it’s motor industry… We are a very unique city and I cannot tell you how proud I am to live here and work here.

“We are a team of nine and we are making a big impression globally. I’m so proud of this city and so proud of what we’ve achieved… this one has me speechless, thank you very much.”

The company was one of eight to scoop an award last night, as the Chamber celebrated the strengths and successes of businesses across Derby and Derbyshire.

Chamber President Liz Fothergill CBE said: “The Chamber’s congratulations go to all of this year’s winners. We had some stellar entries and the judging process was extremely tough, but all of the winning businesses thoroughly deserve their success.

“The standard of competition was extremely high, which clearly shows that, following a year in which the local economy has made remarkable progress, we have some real success stories of Derbyshire businesses doing well.

“Over the past 12 months, businesses in Derbyshire have been busy investing, innovating, exporting and growing and these awards are testament to the quality of businesses we have in this county.”
