New funding to support cancer research in Leicester

Hope Against Cancer is committing £160K of new funding to support vital, life-saving research carried out in the University of Leicester and on-site at Leicester Royal Infirmary.

The local cancer research charity already funds priority research into the early detection of cancer and in recent years has been instrumental in putting Leicester on the map as a recognised centre of excellence in cancer research.

Hope Against Cancer has been particularly supportive in helping to establish cutting-edge clinical trials at Leicester Royal Infirmary, where the charity also funds a research nurse, adding to the care and support that patients receive during these trials.

The new funding will go towards a number of projects including installing expensive equipment to speed up the investigation into and developing of a liquid biopsy, improving treatments in endometrial cancer, and developing targeted medicines to treat lung cancers.

Nigel Rose, Hope Against Cancer Chief Executive, said: “Ensuring that Leicester remains a hub of expertise in cancer research to the benefit of local cancer patients throughout Leicestershire and Rutland is a key strategic aim of our charity.

"This funding, raised through the help of local people and businesses, has been carefully prioritised with our partners at the University of Leicester and the hospitals to make a positive impact in our fight against cancer.

"To everyone who has helped us with their donations, we cannot thank you enough. Your support not only means a great deal to us but to anyone affected by cancer.”

Professor Anne Thomas, Professor of Cancer Therapeutics at the Leicester Cancer Research Centre, said: “Hope Against Cancer’s commitment to supporting this additional research is fantastic. This support, along with the Hope Facility, is central to the research strategy for the Leicester Cancer Research Centre, and allows us to focus on delivering research of international standing with the ultimate goal of providing benefit to patients.”
