Chamber comments on proposed UK/EU deal

Following the announcement that the United Kingdom and European Union have reached an agreement on Brexit, Scott Knowles, Chief Executive at East Midlands Chamber (Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire), said:

“On the face of it, this appears to be a positive development which gives reason for cautious optimism that Brexit negotiations may, finally, be entering their end-game.

“However, should this deal come to fruition, the devil will very much be in the detail and businesses remain a long way from receiving the assurances and certainties they require to confidently move forward.

“If this deal is the answer, questions will undoubtedly remain as to its implementation. We would urge politicians to remember that this deal won’t be played out on paper, but in real-world scenarios that businesses will have to navigate and negotiate.

“Now, more than ever, the needs of the business community must be front-and-centre if we are to overcome challenges, seize opportunities and build a prosperous future for the UK as we leave the EU.”
