Search begins for region’s most enterprising women

The search for the region’s most enterprising women officially begun with a launch event at Horsley Lodge last night (24 October).

Guest speakers included Amanda Foster, Managing Director at Dragonfly’s Team Synergy Centre, and Emma Brealey, Director at Petwood Hotel.

Amanda spoke about her inspirational journey into business. With more than 29 years’ experience within Defence and Industry, she has progressed from military leadership to running her own organisation.

She discussed the importance of having her female colleagues around her in her military days and how, being a female minority in the sector, forums and groups such as Enterprising Women play such an important role in supporting women through their careers.

Emma returned to speak with guests following her success at last year’s Enterprising Women Awards, where she receiving the headline award of Business Woman of the Year.

Judges last year were impressed by Emma’s work at Petwood Hotel, where she led a huge business turnaround and continued to achieve on other successful projects, such as an award-winning garden restoration.

Recognition at the 2019 awards came after she was runner-up in the same category in 2018.

She said: “It was words of encouragement from Jean Mountain (Co-chair of Enterprising Women) which made me try again. This is what supporting each other is all about and why this forum is so great. Please enter the awards, it may change the way you view your own success story.”

Co-Chairs of Enterprising Women, Jean Mountain and Eileen Richards, both hosted the successful launch.

Eileen said: “The awards are testament to the effort the Chamber extends to ensure women in business, from entrepreneurs to apprentices, are recognised for their fantastic achievements. The Enterprising Women network aims to shout for those that can go underappreciated.”

There is an even greater opportunity for success this year, with eight awards covering a range of sectors, teams and career stages, including:

  • Social Commitment (sponsored by Hastings Direct)
  • Apprentice of the Year (sponsored by Derby College)
  • Female Employee of the Year (sponsored by Smallman and Son)
  • Female Entrepreneur of the Year (sponsored by Leicester Racecourse)
  • Team of the Year (sponsored by Leicester Tigers)
  • Small Business of the Year (sponsored by The Belmont Hotel)

There is also a brand new award for 2020, Outstanding Contribution to Work in STEM (sponsored by Pick Everard).

The deadline for entries is Monday 16 December. Entries are open on a nomination basis but can be self-nominated. The winners will be revealed at a glittering gala ceremony on Friday 6 March 2020 – a highlight of the Enterprising Women events calendar.

Jean added: “With the new category being released for 2020, this could be your year to get involved. The gala dinner is always a fabulous night and a great opportunity to meet some fantastic businesses. Even if you are unsure about applying, we advise you get involved regardless to ensure you do not miss your chance.”
