Chamber reacts to Conservative election win
Reacting to the news this morning that the general election has delivered a Conservative majority, Scott Knowles, Chief Executive at East Midlands Chamber*, said:
“The Chamber congratulates Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his Conservative Party on their election win, along with all MPs elected in Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire and our three cities.
“Being an apolitical organisation, the Chamber’s key concern is in ensuring businesses in our region have the support and conditions needed to thrive. These conditions are best met when businesses have a backdrop of certainty and stability to plan against.
“Such conditions have been evidently lacking in recent years; notably brought on through deep divisions over Brexit and exacerbated by a hung Parliament in 2017, unable to take decisions on behalf of the country.
“However, there is no time for the next Government to celebrate. The hard work must start now in delivering an orderly Brexit, healing the fractures within politics and society that have been prevalent in recent times and, crucially, refocusing on the domestic agenda – an area that has been chronically overlooked for far too long.
“Businesses here in the East Midlands have been stoic, determined and have shown a deep desire to evolve and grow but make no mistake, this has been in spite of the political climate, not because of it.
“We look forward to working with the new Government, along with all of our elected representatives at a local, regional and national level, in ensuring that our region gets the attention and investment it needs and deserves in order to reach its undoubted potential.”
