Chamber reacts to leaked Network Rail HS2 warning
Reacting to a leaked Network Rail letter to Transport Secretary Grant Shapps, which suggests scrapping HS2 in favour of other alternatives would lead to “three decades of travel chaos”, Scott Knowles, Chief Executive at East Midlands Chamber* said:
“Network Rail is absolutely right to highlight the significant repercussions for the United Kingdom if HS2 is not delivered in full.
“There can be no doubt that our Victorian-aged rail infrastructure needs a complete overhaul. The delivery of HS2 in its entirety not only provides the essential step-change needed in terms of capacity and connectivity, there is also clear evidence that HS2, as opposed to sticking plaster alternate solutions, is the most viable and aspirational option available.
“Our region specifically, and the UK generally, deserves rail infrastructure fit for the 21st Century if we are to remain competitive and aspire to an even brighter future.
“Government has committed to focusing on, and investing in, a domestic agenda which has the potential to have a profoundly positive effect on both the East Midlands and the UK. In respect of HS2, it’s now time to turn these laudable words into actions.”
