East Midlanders are being urged to nominate individuals for the national King’s Honours.
The region’s Lord Lieutenants are appealing for individuals with a passion for improving the lives of others to be put forward for nomination.
Each list recognises people who have given exceptional service, or have achieved achieved great things, and for going above and beyond the call of duty.
It also recognises those who have shown moral courage against the odds and who and have gained the respect of their peers.
Examples could include individuals who:
- Exemplify selfless voluntary service
- Demonstrate innovation and entrepreneurship
- Work to tackle discrimination
- Improve the lives of vulnerable people
- Are major philanthropists
- Help children and young people achieve their potential
- Aid social mobility, enhancing life chances and tackling deprivation
- Deal with environmental problems and the protection of the environment
- Work to improve the economic prosperity of local people.
Anyone can make a nomination, though all too often people are overlooked because it is assumed someone else will do it.
Nominations should be relatively short and clear – highlighting the person’s special qualities and showing what they have personally done, rather than a team’s achievements.
They should explain how the individual has “gone the extra mile” and perhaps made personal sacrifices to succeed, and demonstrate the impact they have made. Supporting facts and figures should be included where appropriate.

Derbyshire’s Lord Lieutenant Elizabeth Fothergill said: “Although the national media often showcases ‘celebrities’ receiving national honours, the vast majority of recipients are individuals from every corner of the UK.
“Nominating someone for an honour is relatively easy. As well as completing a nomination form, applicants are expected to provide evidence of the impact of the individual’s activities together with letters of support from people who know them or have benefitted from their work.
“Of course, not every nomination is successful which is why you should do this in confidence and without telling the person you are nominating, but why not have a go?”
