Exporting for the Service Sector

Importing & Exporting

Event Banner Image
Description
The UK is renowned for being a service-based economy, the sector contributing some 81% of UK GDP; the financial services sector dominates, the City of London being the 2nd largest financial centre in the world..

Whilst the UK operates an export deficit, overall figures are influenced by a large goods export deficit; our services sector actually operates an export surplus year on year. Our technology sector is valued at some US$ 1 trillion (third only to the US and China) and our aerospace sector is the 2nd largest national aerospace industry worldwide. The truth is that services-based companies are the backbone of the UK economy and a huge source of innovation, national talent, and export potential.
Overview
Despite these facts and hugely impressive figures, the service sector is often overlooked when it comes to exporting support. Even with bilateral trade agreement in place, the services trading landscape can be complex and restrictive without the likes of Country-of-Origin Principle or Mutual Recognition of Qualifications.

The truth is that policies that facilitate or impede services trade come in many shapes and forms, partly because individual services sectors are very different i.e. legal advice vs healthcare; and partly because services can be exchanged in many different ways. Many of which can require some sort of permit, license or are otherwise subject to domestic regulations.

Many UK companies remain totally unaware of their legal obligations in trading services with the EU now, and indeed with the rest of the world; this may prevent some from exploring exports and may leave some exposed to potential non-compliance action. If you would like to learn more about how you can grow your service exports whilst ensuring local market compliance and avoiding hefty penalties, join us for this webinar.
