Carbon Literacy for SMEs 

This course runs over 2 x half days on the 12 & 19 September  2022, attendance is required at both sessions.

If you feel that you need to do something to get you started on your journey to combat climate change and are working for or with an SME in the Fashion retail sector, then through this course you will get the knowledge and tools to set you off on the right path.

No previous environmental knowledge is needed.

Carbon Literacy is:

An awareness of the carbon dioxide costs and impacts of everyday activities, and the ability and motivation to reduce emissions, on an individual, community and organisational basis.

Over 30,000 citizens and 90 organisations have already been certified Carbon Literate so far, with over 2,500 organisations being engaged. 

Course programme in detail

By the end of the course, delegates will have:

  • Gained an understanding of the basic science of climate change and how climate change will affect us both globally and locally
  • Gained an understanding of how climate change will affect SMEs, particularly those in the Fashion sector
  • Explored the low carbon objectives in the Fashion SME sector
  • Created an action plan to help reduce the carbon footprint of their workplace
  • Explored strategies for influencing others to take action on climate change

Course outcome

  • Understand and explain the science around climate change and how it affects us globally and locally
  • Have the tools and knowledge to reduce the carbon impact of your business
  • Build your own climate pledges to take action on climate change

Who should attend

The course is for any manager or staff member working for or with an SME in the Fashion retail sector and who is interested in understanding their organisation's carbon footprint and engaging their business in reducing their carbon impact.

Only businesses based in designated UK Community Renewal Fund areas are eligible. In the East Midlands, these are:

  • Derbyshire Dales and the High Peak
  • Bassetlaw, Mansfield, Newark and Sherwood
  • Nottingham City
  • Leicester City

Course delivery

Training will be delivered online via Zoom through 2 X 3.5 hour sessions, and 1 hour of home-based activities, which are required to complete the course.

It will consist of a mixture of presentations, group activities, videos, quizzes and games.

Please ensure you have a WiFi/internet connection and adequate equipment that enables you to fully participate in the course (it is not recommended to do the course via iPhone/Smartphone). You will get the best out of the training if you use a laptop or PC (with a camera).

About the trainers

Training will be delivered by Alice Jackson, Academic Engagement Officer, University of Leicester & Christiane Startin-Lorent, Owner of 'Lorent Training', which through the provision of Carbon Literacy Training empowers Micro, Small and Medium-sized businesses to achieve behaviour change among their stakeholders and supports them on their journey to Net-Zero.

Carbon Literacy certification 

To receive the Carbon Literacy certification, you will need to submit an assessment form at the end of the course. This will be checked by the Carbon Literacy Project to ensure it meets their criteria.
