About the role

The treasurer role is one of the most important roles on the Board of Trustees.  We employ a full time Finance Manager; the Treasurer takes an overview. The role is unremunerated. It requires 30-40 hours of work per year: 18-20 hours for quarterly finance panel meetings and Board meetings, with an additional 10-20 hours per year for additional reading or dealing with important issues.

A small, relatively young charity, the Community Foundation has good relationships between staff and trustees, increasing profile with charitable groups and potential donors, and a real commitment to building support for local needs.

Responsibilities

  • Take a broad overview of the financial affairs of the organisation, making sure they are legal, constitutional and within accepted accounting practice.
  • Ongoing review of the effectiveness of financial procedures, records, and controls
  • Chair the quarterly Finance Panel.
  • Review production of financial reports/returns, accounts and audits
  • Keep an overview of the financial viability of the organisation.
  • Take a lead in interpreting financial data and information to other trustees .
  • With the Finance Manager, report the financial position at Board meetings.
  • Lead on appointing auditors
  • With trustees and staff, ensure an appropriate investment policy

Qualities

  • Knowledge and experience of financial management and accounting.
  • Knowledge and/or interest in finance practice relevant to charities.
  • Ability to communicate with colleagues who may not have an accounting or finance background
  • Supportive approach to a hardworking charity in a challenging environment .
  • Interest in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland communities and their support.
