Stage 3 of roadmap to recovery confirmation welcomed by East Midlands Chamber as it urges Government to keep on track for next step
Responding to confirmation by Prime Minister Boris Johnson that stage three of the Government’s roadmap to recovery out of lockdown will commence as planned on Monday 17 May, East Midlands Chamber (Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire) chief executive Scott Knowles said: “Confirmation that hospitality businesses, along with other venues such as cinemas, will be able to reopen to indoor customers from next Monday (17 May) will be hugely welcomed by all parts of the economy.
“While the lifting of restrictions last month to enable outdoor service has provided a clear boost to confidence among businesses, today’s announcement will provide far more certainty about what lies ahead and marks another important step towards normal life.
“It will also enable more people who have been furloughed to return to work and get our economy moving in the right direction, while firms can take advantage of the pent-up consumer demand that has been clearly evidenced during the past month.
“With social distancing restrictions still enforced, however, it’s going to be crucial that Government support remains in place due to the capacity limits this imposes on many businesses, such as those in hospitality, while indoor events aren’t yet permitted.
Optimism for face-to-face events
“A recent survey undertaken by East Midlands Chamber among our members show that three-quarters (74%) of people are looking forward to the return of face-to-face events, with only 12% feeling apprehensive or not keen on attending them.
“While we know this is a very fast-moving situation and will require public health data to remain encouraging, it feels like our country will soon be ready to take the next major step towards normality as we enter what we hope will be the final throes of the pandemic.”Back
