Overview

As an Accounts Assistant, you play a vital role in ensuring the smooth financial operation of the Chamber. You’ll support the finance team with invoice processing, credit control, and key accounting tasks. Whether you’re chasing overdue payments or ensuring our records are accurate and compliant, you’ll be a key contributor to the day-to-day financial health of the organisation.

To maximise operational availability, the usual working pattern will be between 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday for 4 hours per day. Please state any time preferences in the application covering letter.

Overview

Key areas of responsibility

  • Invoice and accounts processing – Accurately process and record sales and purchase invoices using Business Central. Assist with standard journal entries and ensure they align with accounting standards. Support accounts payable processes, including preparing payment runs.
  • Credit control and financial administration – Proactively manage debtor relationships and chase overdue accounts. Post and allocate receipts to the accounting system. Respond to internal and external financial queries with professionalism and accuracy. Ensure compliance with financial regulations and internal procedures.
  • Team and organisational Support – Provide ad-hoc support to the finance team and Head of Finance as needed. Manage a variety of admin tasks, including data entry and filing. Liaise with colleagues across the Chamber and external customers to support seamless financial operations.

Overview

Applicants will possess

  • Relevant experience in credit control and accounts support.
  • Familiarity with finance systems, ideally Microsoft Business Central.
  • Understanding of public sector audit requirements and financial compliance.
  • Experience of working with a broad range of businesses would be an advantage but not essential.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Confidently works independently, but also a team player.
  • Strong organisational and multitasking abilities.
  • Confident using Microsoft Office (particularly Outlook, Teams and Excel).
  • A willingness and ability to learn on the job.
  • Reliable, punctual and proactive.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Tactful, professional and proud to support others.

If you’re successful at this stage, you will be invited for an interview. If you’re unsuccessful, the Chamber’s HR team will let you know by email.

First, you’ll be invited to interview virtually via Microsoft Teams or in-person at our Chesterfield office. If your interview goes well, you may be invited to attend a second interview or offered the role. Some interviews might require you to compile some research or to prepare a presentation. At the end of the interview, the interviewer will confirm the timeline for next steps.

Interviews usually last around an hour with a mix of competency based interview questions, and in some cases, we might ask you to carry out some practical exercises.

Decisions will be made at each stage of the process, as we score applicants against the role criteria. If you’re successful, we will contact you to make an offer. This will be followed up in writing and a contract will be sent to you once a start date is confirmed. You will receive information on your induction and what you will do on your first day.
